Driving thru the park
after many a year gone by.
Thinking to see the beauty of nature
from hilltop, way up high.
But those memories are over
as I sit to eat my lunch.
This place has been changed
by a cold uncaring touch.
Once water rippled by the moving
of a carefree little fish.
Now is disrupted by the litter
the beer cans and plastic dish.
The grass once so green and lush
stretching out to visions end.
Now cut thru with concrete
So that on their comfort, the golfers
can depend.
Each spring catch the turtles
so that they may not harm a duck.
Yet what is difference
they are left to swim green muck.
The playground once so shiny
a place the kids could play.
Now broken down and rusted,
eroding to blow away.
I used to come to sit
and relax in the place.
Now man's greed for pleasure,
and the uncaring for the world
has changed it's features
to a cold and saddened face.
As I gaze across the lake
there plays a few otter.
When did they move in
Will they bite my son or daughter?
I've tried to teach them right
to respect this place we live.
But if I bring them here,
what impression would it give.
To buy fast food and drink
then throw your trash aside.
It's ok no one will care
litter is practiced world wide.
I shudder at the thought
to think man has ceased to care.
Maybe post a sign
telling the animals to beware.
As I finish my sandwich
I sit the paper beside my leg.
For the trash can's in the water
Bobbing like an empty keg.
I drive away saying my goodbyes
to this once beautiful place.
Disheartened by the visit
as a tear rolls down my face.
I say goodbye because I know
that I shall not be back.
The tranquility for which I was searching
this place now does lack.
Whispering softly on the wind
I hope mankind wakes up soon.
'Fore the whole world is covered
with concrete and trash,
unraked leaves burned and blackened
and the breeze filled with ash.
